Top story overnight: Hurricane Jimena continued to strengthen overnight as it headed toward Mexico’s resort-studded Baja California Peninsula, The Associated Press reported. At the time of this writing, the storm was just short of Category 5 status, with winds of near 155 mph. In response, emergency workers struggled to evacuate thousands of reluctant residents who reportedly fear looters more than the coming hurricane. According to the National Weather Service, a Category 5 storm will cause “catastrophic damage.” Previous storms of this magnitude include Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
In other news: Civilian deaths in Iraq climbed to the highest level since April, taking the lives of 393 people, Reuters reported. The number of fatalities is still lower than at the height of the sectarian violence in 2006 and 2007. In August 2007, for example, 1,773 civilians were killed.
A massive wildfire continued to rage in Southern California today after destroying over 50 homes and threatening 12,000 others. The six-day-old blaze, which officials say could take weeks to contain, chased 2,000 people from their homes and scorched about 105,000 acres of land. Click here to watch AP video from the scene.
Same-sex couples may now tie the knot in Vermont. The new law, which took effect at midnight, was celebrated by Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan, who exchanged vows after spending 17 years together. “It feels wonderful,” said Slimback, 38, who is taking Sullivan’s last name as his own. “It’s a day I’ve been long waiting for, and a day I truly honestly thought would never come.” Vermont is one of five states that now allow same-sex couples to marry. Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Iowa are the others.
Finally, Chanel, the world’s oldest dog, died on Aug. 28 at 21 — or 147 in dog years. The wire-haired dachshund was a shelter dog who found her forever home with Denice Shaughnessy of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. She liked eating home-cooked chicken, chocolate and peanut butter-flavored cake and wore sweaters because she was sensitive to the cold.
