Why do so called “NO KILL” shelters continue to perpetuate the myth that they can save every animal?

Is it to keep the money coming in? Don't they realize that claiming to be no kill encourages irresponsible pet owners who dump their animals claiming – the no kill shelter will find them a home? What do no kill shelters do when they reach their quota? Send the people to the “Kill” shelters? Do they really believe that shelters (ususally govt run ones) want to kill animals instead of finding them homes? I have nothing against shelters who try to find homes for animals but please – tell the public the truth – the public has to be responsible and take care of the animals they have or don't get one. My neighbor contstantly gets animals from the humane society, when they tire of them, they let them roam, neighbors complain so her solution is to dump them back at the “no kill” shelter. She told me “they will find another home there”. What about no kill shelter animals that live in cages/kennels all their lives? It might be no kill but it is also no life.

How To Recognize, Prevent, And Handle Dog Aggression

What are the different types of dog aggression?

Dogs can possess many different types of aggression, but this article will focus on the main two types. It is important to recognize which type your dog has, since they come from different causes and thus have different methods of treatment.

1. Aggression directed at strangers

What is it?

This type is fairly simple to recognize. Your dog may act nervous around strangers or new people in the house. Your dog may also be on constant alert, meaning they can’t lie quietly, pace around or bark or whine at the smallest sound. On the other hand your dog may be the other extreme and remains completely still, not moving at all, and starring intently at the person they feel aggression for.

What causes this aggression?

The foremost reason for aggression towards strangers is that your dog never learned how to get used to them. It is important to realize that you essentially are your dog’s parent, and they rely on you completely to teach them and to acclimate them to normal social living. Lacking the chance to get out of the house and have consistent, positive experiences in the world outside, will prevent your dog from feeling confident in unknown situations. Without these experiences, your dog can hardly relax when they leave their comfort zone.

What is the best way to handle it?

Your dog or puppy needs to be socialized to the outside surroundings, including people and other animals. This is one of the most important things to do when you have a dog. It is best to begin socializing your dog at a young age, right around the time they have had their vaccinations. Socializing your dog allows them to learn from their own experiences. Your dog will learn that new sights and sounds are fun, and not scary.

It won’t be sufficient to just take your dog into a crowded place and tell them “Calm down, it’s okay Buddy” — your dog must learn this for themselves. Ideally your dog should be socialized as a puppy so they have more chances to learn this. Additionally, it is best to expose your dog to many types of people (babies, teens, men, women, people in uniform, wearing a motorcycle h
1000
elmet or carrying an umbrella) in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. This will create a feeling of ease and happiness when confronted with strangers or new situations.

How do I socialize my dog so that they don’t develop a fear of strangers?

Socializing your dog is fairly easy, and is more general than a targeted training routine. If you have a puppy then take them to puppy preschool (a generic term for a series of easy group-training classes). These classes are likely to be held at a vet clinic, which is beneficial since it will teach your puppy a positive association with the veterinarian. Puppy preschool usually consists of 10 puppy owners and a qualified trainer, where you begin teaching them basic obedience commands (sit, stay, etc).

The best part of puppy preschool is the play times, which happen a few times a class where the the puppies are encouraged to play freely off the leash with the other puppies. This is a perfect environment for them to be socialized, since there are lots of new dogs and people to interact with, and it is safe and controlled. Socialization doesn’t end after puppy preschool, it’s a continuous effort throughout your dog’s life. They need to be taken to a variety of new places around various people. The trick is to build up your dog’s tolerance slowly, so they don’t become overwhelmed and frightened.

2. Aggression towards family members

The two most common causes of a dog showing aggression toward members of their own human family are:

~ Your dog is defending something they think of as theirs from a perceived threat (you), which is known as resource guarding.

~ Your dog is uncomfortable with the treatment/handling they receive from you or other family members.

What’s resource guarding?

Resource guarding is quite common among dogs. If your dog is resource guarding then they may snarl at you if you approach them while they are eating, or they give you “the eye” (direct stare) if you attempt to take a toy away. All dogs can be possessive from time to time, since it is in their natures. At times your dog may be possessive over objects with no apparent value, such as inedible trash, crumpled up paper or tissue, or old socks. However, frequently resource guarding is an issue over things with an understandable value like food and toys.

What causes resource guarding?

Dominance is the root cause. Dogs are pack animals, and so they are used to a very structured environment. In a dog pack, each dog is ranked in a hierarchy of position and power (or “dominance”) in relation to every other animal. Each knows the rank of every other dog, which means they know exactly how to act in any given situation. Dogs view their human family as their own dog pack. Your dog has ranked each member of the family, and has their own perception of where they rank in this pack as well.

If your dog perceives that they are higher up on the social totem-pole than other family members, there will be a power struggle in the house. If your dog thinks they are the pack leader then they will act aggressively, because dominance and aggression are the exclusive rights of a superior-ranked animal. An underdog would never show aggression or act dominantly to a higher-ranked animal, since they know the consequences would be dire. Resource guarding is a typical example of expressing dominant behavior, as only a higher-ranked dog would show aggression to defend their resources. The bottom line is is your dog knew that they are not the pack leader, then they would never attempt to prevent you from taking away toys or food.

So how do I handle this?

The best course of action for dominant, aggressive behavior is consistent and frequent obedience work. Training your dog to be obedient will demonstrate your authority over your dog. All you need is two 15-minute sessions each day to make it crystal clear to your dog that you are the boss, and that it pays to do what you sa
1000
y. This can be made clear by rewarding your dog (with treats and lavish praise) for obeying a command, and isolating them (putting them in a “time-out”, either outside the house or in a room by themselves) for misbehavior. If you are unfamiliar with canine psychology and communication it is best to learn about this, so you can understand what your dog is trying to say. This will help you to stop any dominant behaviors, and to communicate your own authority more effectively. Keep obedience sessions short and productive (no more than fifteen minutes – maybe two or three of these per day), so it will not be a chore for you or your dog.

Why doesn’t my dog like to be handled?

Every dog has different handling thresholds. While some dogs are perfectly happy to be hugged, kissed, and have an arm draped over their shoulders (this is essentially the “I’m the boss” gesture to a dog); others (typically the ones not used having much physical contact from a very young age) are uncomfortable with too much full-body contact. The latter will get anxious and irritated when someone continues to try and hug them. Another common cause of handling-induced aggression is a bad grooming experience. When a dog’s nails are clipped it is quite easy to accidentally cut the blood vessel that runs inside the nail. This is extremely painful to a dog, and a sure-fire way to cause a long-lasting aversion to clippers. Many dogs also have an aversion to being bathed. A lot of owners, when dealing with a wild-eyed, half-washed, upset dog, feel that they must forcibly restrain the dog to finish the bath. This will only add to the dog’s sense of panic, and reinforces their impression that bath-time is something to be avoided at all costs, and if necessary, to defend themselves by showing their teeth and growling.

Can my dog be retrained to enjoy handling and grooming?

It is definitely much easier to start off training your dog at a young age. Handle your puppy frequently, and get them used to being touched and rubbed all over. Typically young dogs like being handled, and it is usually the older ones who aren’t used to much physical contact during their lives that sometimes find physical affection difficult to accept. You can practice picking up your dog’s paws and touching them with the clipper, or take them to the bathing area (warm water is much more soothing for a dog than a freezing spray of ice water). Be sure to supplement with lots of praise and the occasional small treat throughout the process.

It is a bit more difficult for an older dog that may have already experienced many unpleasant handling/grooming instances. First you must undo the damage already caused by those bad experiences. To do this you need to take things nice and slow, making sure your dog remains calm through the process. As soon as they begin to show signs of stress, stop immediately and let them calm down. It will work better if you introduce this to them like a game, by giving lots of praise and treats. Remember to take things slowly and if you get nervous during the process stop. Dogs show aggression for a reason — they are warning you to back off, or else!

If your dog continues to resist being groomed, despite all the practice you put in, it’s wise to use a professional groomer. Your vet can clip their nails for you, but do make sure to tell him first that your dog gets aggressive when the clippers come out. For bathing and brushing you can use any of the number of dog-grooming businesses available in your area, and again be sure to tell them about your dog’s reaction to the experience first.

Every year hundreds of thousands of dogs are put to sleep in the United States. These are shelter dogs. Dogs that ran away from home, dogs that were dropped off at the shelter because their owners didn’t want them, and dogs that were taken from neglecting owners.

This is a tragedy. What a horrible way to treat who we call “Man’s Best Friend”. I believe that most of this needless death could be avoided through a few responsible practices on the part of dog owners.

The main and number one reason that we have so many euthanized dogs every year is due to poor breeding practices. To put it simply, there are far too many unwanted dogs born to far too many irresponsible dog owners.

In my years working with dogs I have come across many dog owners who want to breed their dogs. I often ask them why they want to breed and the answers, in my opinion, are crazy.

“Well, I want my kids to be able to witness the miracle of birth.” I have heard this one a number of times. This is one of the worst reasons you can have to breed a dog. If your main desire is education then buy a book about animal reproduction. Rent a documentary about animal breeding, don’t bring more animals into the world. Bringing an entire litter into the world just so your kids can see a birth is irresponsible. What often happens to the poor puppies is that they are given away to friends and neighbors or out in front of the local Wal-Mart. The potential owners are never pre-qualified to determine if they would be a good dog owner. The net result is often a new dog owner who is completely unprepared for a puppy. How many of these puppies end up at the shelter when their owners decide they can’t handle a puppy? There are no accurate statistics but the hundreds of thousands of dogs in shelters are a testament to this practice.

“I think it is only fair to allow my dog to have a litter. She is such a sweet dog she should have the chance to be a mother.” Ahhhhh! I scream inside every time I hear this phrase. Just because you have a sweet, female dog doesn’t mean that you should allow her to have puppies. Your dog doesn’t have a ticking biological clock urging her to be a mom. Sure, instinct kicks in when she goes into heat but if you spay your dog she won’t come into heat. Besides, as the human owner with a better and more elevated level of judgment, you should be the one who determines if she should be a mom, not her.

I am a huge advocate of responsible breeding practices. I support dog owners and dog breeders who breed dogs in order to improve their chosen breed. That is to say, breeders who recognize a fine representative of a breed and breed that dog with another fine specimen in order to theoretically improve the breed. These breeders then responsibly screen potential owners to make sure that their puppies will be raised by good dog owners.

The consequences of poor breeding are ugly. Please, don’t breed your dog for the wrong reasons.

Helping Abandoned West Highland Terriers

Every year, many dogs, including west highland terriers are welcomed by many families into their homes. During the first few weeks… months probably, the new family member is loved and adored and often became the apple of everybody’s eye. However, when things did not turned out as expected; accidents became frequent, increasing number of holes in the front lawn or annoying noise almost every time, the love and adoration usually jumps out of the window and leave without turning back. It was only then did the realization hit that the breed is not actually the ideal breed for the family. The next thing you know, this ought-to-be ideal family is turning over Fido to the nearest animal shelter or worst, abandoning the poor creature on his own.

West highland terriers are abandoned for various reasons. But abandonment wouldn’t have had happened only if people are responsible enough to assess themselves to determine what specific breed is right for them and they are well aware of the care, time and attention needed by these pets to become healthy and happy. It is also vital that people ensure the quality of pet they will be getting and avoid those from puppy mill breeders. With this, not only will it lessen the number of abandoned pets but will also strike a blow to puppy mill breeders.

One can also help abandoned dogs through dog adoption. Through dog adoption, you help save a dog from possible death because chronologically ill dogs, elderly dogs, problematic dogs or those who have been staying in the shelter for a long period of time are often at risk of euthanasia. However, there are issues surrounding dog adoption. Some believe that dogs from shelters are problematic dogs thus given up by their previous owners. It may be true that some dogs do have problems, people should know and believe that not all dogs in the shelter are problematic dogs. In fact, some of them are already trained either by their previous owners or people from the shelter. Some are even neutered/spayed and have completed their shots and vaccinations required by law.

If still not convinced, try to visit a dog shelter nearest you. There you will find out that adopting a dog is not a bad idea after all. Maybe you’ll realize that it’s great!

About Horse Rescue Shelter

While auctions might be a convenient and cheaper way of getting a horse, it might not be safest. Careful consideration should be taken before participating since the horse, at the beginning, might seem like a bargain, but, after some time, might become more than what buyer bargained for.

One of the things that buyers should be aware of is that some horses are drugged before the auction to make them appear calm during a bidding war. Unfortunately, once the effects subside, the horse may become very difficult to manage and may also become a danger. Another reason that sellers will drug horses is to mask its health issue, and real medication to treat the problem might be costly. However, a horse can be examined by a veterinarian for drugs, prior to the actual purchase. Buyers should also note that horses may not be as well ‘broken’ as they appear to be. Though the horse to be auctioned might appear well-mannered in the middle of the ruckus and noise found in auction houses, it only remains quiet as it is familiar with its handler. And so, when introduced to its new owners it might need a lot more training from a professional to turn it into a horse that will interact properly with a rider. Also, horses may have behavioral problems that the sellers will not disclose, such as cribbing, weaving, stall walking, refusing to load on a trailer, biting, kicking, etc. Lastly, buyers of auctioned horses are seldom given the chance to try before they buy the horse, and unfortunately, ethics that oversee private sales and auctions are completely different, so be careful and critical before bidding.

Seriously, if you want a horse, just visit a horse rescue shelter and adopt.

Beef flavored chunks are available in addition to the beef flavored tablets or solutions that can be given orally to the dogs as a measure against the incidence of heart worms. Avoid mosquito bites by providing proper mosquito-proof shelter facilities to the dogs.

Just plan whether there is any need to go for the heart worm prevention though out the year or only in some months of the year. For example, in case of some countries, the mosquitoes may be dormant in most of the colder months.

However, in some countries, this is not a position. Many a times, medications are available for oral administration to prevent heart worms along with hookworms etc. Such oral medications need to be taken as per the instructions. However, be cautious about the occurrence of any adverse drug reactions in the dog given with such prophylactic therapy.

Adverse event reports need to be sent if you come across any sorts of adverse drug reactions in your dog during the preventive treatment.
Soft beef flavored tablets are highly preferred by the pet animals as the preventive measure against heart worms. The pet owner needs to consult a veterinarian if the dose for the prophylaxis of heart worm is missed for few months. In such occasions, the pet animal needs to undergo the heart worm test.

Heartgard, sentinel, interceptor, revolution, etc. are available in the commercial fields as drugs for the preventive measure. Avoid water stagnation around the dog shelter and the bushes around the area that facilitate mosquito breeding. This test needs to be carried out in consultation with a veterinarian who is specialized in the pet animal health care and medicine.

As a preventive measure for the heart worms, the dogs need to be tested for the evidence of these worms at an age of six months. Real beef chew able tablets are available containing medical agent like ivermectin.
