PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) – The P.E.I. Humane Society is reducing adoption fees at its Charlottetown shelter this week because it’s overflowing with dogs and cats.

Just last week, the shelter took in 36 animals, but sent only 15 to new homes. It is designed to house 90 to 100 dogs and cats, but on Monday, there were 168.
“We’ve had a large number of stray animals brought to us in the last couple of weeks and it’s resulting in some overcrowding,” said development co-ordinator Lisa Hashie.
“When we are overcrowded, it can cause some health issues and we don’t want that to happen. So we would rather reduce the fee and have more animals adopted than have it overcrowded and not being able to accept any other animals that are in need.”
In addition to reducing the adoption fee for every cat and dog by $50, the humane society is extending its hours this week and holding a fundraising barbecue on Thursday.
Regular fees range from $75 for an older cat, to $195 for a young dog, with discounts for multiple adoptions.
The adopt-a-thon special will continue until the end of the week. The goal is to have at least 50 animals in new homes.
